Rench electrical utility Engie has launched development works on one in every of Europe’s main battery power storage techniques (BESS) on the Vilvoorde energy plant website, positioned north of Brussels.
Once commissioned, the 200 MW/800 MWh Vilvoode BESS mission will occupy 3.5 hectares of land and have 320 battery modules measuring 25 mx 4 mx 3 m. The battery park has a 15-year contract with Elia, the nationwide grid operator.
“[The site] there’s sufficient house and glorious electrical grid connectivity,” stated Quentin Renoy, BESS Business Developer at Engie Belgium.
This milestone follows the development allow of the mission in July 2023 and its choice for the capability fee in October 2023. After the public sale final 12 months, the Belgian authorities stated that the 796 MW energy plant of Engie in Vilvoorde will function a backup plant for the primary three years, and might be expanded later given “present limitations of inexperienced power capacities.”
Engie described it as “a double success throughout the CRM framework,” securing the longer term for its website in Belgium.
The Vilvoorde BESS mission might be launched in two phases, with the commissioning of 100 MW of batteries in September 2025, and an extra 100 MW in January 2026.
