SILVERTHORNE, Colorado (KDVR) — The Summit County Emergency Management Agency has sent a message to remind travelers to be prepared for the weekend, especially with a snowstorm on their radar.
“The biggest challenge this year is that everyone wants to be here,” Brian Boveard, Summit County’s director of emergency management, said Friday.
Accommodation booked in plateau
He said there really is no way to exit Summit County between Vail Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel. If Interstate 70 were to close, travelers could be stranded and currently have limited accommodations.
“We spoke with our accommodation partners earlier this week and they confirmed that the accommodation was fully booked,” Boveado said.
He said he just wants everyone to plan their travel schedules for when the winter storms are coming. Just as he said two days ago, the interstate was closed during another snowstorm. People were stranded without a place to stay even before the holiday weekend.
“There have been reports of interstates being closed and people not being able to find places to stay,” Boveado said.
FOX31 and Channel 2 spoke with several hotels and motels along Interstate 70. One hotel, The Pad at Silverthorne, said it always does everything it can to accommodate guests, even when there are no rooms left.
Rob Baer, owner of The Pad, said, “There are people who want a place to wait a few hours for the road to open, or to be stranded here for the night.
Travelers, be prepared for possible road closures
Baer said the site is staffed 24/7, so people can come and hang out in the lobby area while they wait for the highway to open. He said people don’t have to buy a room for one night to hang out in the lobby area.
He also said they weren’t taking advantage of highway closures. rice field.
“When the highways are closed, we have the opportunity to raise the tolls, but we said we would never do that,” says Baer.
Boveard said people on the streets should have at least half a tank of gasoline, blankets, food, water and other essentials in case they get stranded.
