Venture capitalists (VCs) and high-net-worth angel investors once owned the investment space of startups. It used to be illegal for ordinary investors to invest in startups, but that is rapidly changing. Not only can regular investors now invest in the same startups as VCs, but VCs often get better terms.
One such example is game fliphas raised $10 million in venture capital and is now open to anyone to invest.
Gameflip seeks to capitalize on the increasing transferability of game assets through the sale of blockchain and non-blockchain related game items. Today, dozens of games are built around asset transferability, and others with natural markets have emerged.
This is also attracting attention from Silicon Valley. The company has raised his $10 million from his VCs including PlayNext, Lightbank, GoAhead Ventures and Bullpen Capital.
What’s wrong: Gameflip, a leading platform for buying and selling in-game items, recently launched an equity crowdfunding or community round in which anyone can invest.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) and Team Fortress 2 (TF2) are two of the best-known examples of games that develop secondary markets for in-game items. Before Steam, the popular PC gaming platform, officially created a marketplace, players often had to join special servers to redeem in-game. There are currently several Steam-based games that seamlessly trade in-game items on the marketplace.
However, there are hundreds of games that are not or recognized on Steam or its marketplaces, leaving a wide range of opportunities for such marketplaces. This includes the still developing multi-billion dollar non-fungible token (NFT) craze and continued implementation in games.

Gameflip is no small operation. Its top accounts sell millions of dollars in items, and he has over $140 million in trading volume on the platform. He also consistently ranks first in searches for buying and selling in-game items.
Gone are the days when VCs would invest in these startups and exclusively share all the potential benefits. Now anyone can invest in a company like Gameflip.
