A tourist in Thailand has been taken to hospital after suffering serious injuries including a fractured skull, broken ribs and a punctured lung in a motorcycle accident.
Adam Davies from Pembrokeshire, South Wales faces thousands of medical bills not covered by travel insurance because he failed to read the details of his policy.
The 28-year-old was vacationing on Koh Tao when he was involved in a car accident on Boxing Day. Her sister Jessica Davis, 30, was “hit by a telephone pole” around the corner and she remains in a hospital on Koh Samui, she said.
“He sustained multiple injuries, including three fractures to his skull, bleeding in the brain, a punctured lung, five broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a broken shoulder blade, a broken ankle, and other minor injuries. ,” she wrote on her GoFundMe page for her brother.
“His insurance has not been paid, which means he will have to find the funds himself to pay his growing bills as long as he is in the hospital.”
Lack of “small print” details in policies
Ms Davis explained to the BBC that her brother had global travel insurance, but had taken out a policy through Lloyd’s Bank, but had been out of the UK for more than 31 days and had not been paid for medical care. Mr Davis’ policy was in effect for a year, but he had to return to the UK before he could travel again after 30 days.
“It was trivial. He took out insurance to allow him to travel all over the world. That’s how it was marketed. But it only covered him for one country for 31 consecutive days.” I didn’t put it on,” she explained. She now urges other travelers to beware of the “small print” that “no one really reads.”
Fundraising for medical expenses
Davis started the GoFundMe page in hopes of raising £15,000 ($26,336) to cover his brother’s medical bills. Costs have not yet been disclosed, but ongoing treatment is likely. The family has already surpassed their original goal, raising over £22,000 ($38,605).
Davis’ parents flew from Wales to Thailand to be with their son at their own expense. Any remaining money collected after settling hospital bills will be donated to charity, Davis said.
“While we are simply grateful that his life was saved, his situation of being hospitalized alone in a foreign country continues to have a lasting impact on his health and we We want to minimize pain.
Australians warned to know what they’re covered for
As Australians begin to spread their wings again, it’s important they understand how travel insurance can help take care of them, a Cover-More spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia. Told.
Unlike Davis’ policy, which states that “Cover-More travel insurance covers the duration of your trip even if you are away from Australia for more than 12 months at a time,” all policies are different.
This is why Cover-More encourages travelers to understand exactly what their coverage is before they leave Australia. Motorcycle and Moped Ride Cover is an additional coverage that can be added to your travel insurance for an additional premium.
“Also, if you are unable to return home on your original date due to unforeseen circumstances (such as being hospitalized), the policy will automatically be extended until you are physically able to return home,” they said. I got
