Peru’s St. Bede Academy received the College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award in recognition of its high female representation in the AP Computer Science Principles. Awarded school expands girls’ access to AP computer science courses.
More than 1,100 institutions have achieved 50% or more female representation in any of the two AP Computer Science courses during the 2021-2022 academic year, or It was more than the proportion of the female population in the school.
In 2022, St. Bede Academy will be one of 832 schools recognized in the AP Computer Science Principles category.
St Bede Academy Principal Nick McLaughlin said: “We are honored that our school has received this award and look forward to seeing these young women and others pursue their computer science education and careers and achieve success.”
College Board AP Program Director Trevor Packer said: “Five years after we launched the AP Computer Science Women’s Diversity Awards, it is heartening to see schools like St. Bede Academy welcoming so many young women into this important field. am.”
The first year of AP Computer Science Principles, 2016-17, attracted more students and increased participation than any other AP course debut. In 2022, 134,651 students took the AP CSP exam. This is more than three times his number of candidates in the first year of the course.
In 2022, 44,811 women took the AP CSP exam. That’s more than triple her number of test takers in 2017.
Providing female students with access to computer science courses is critical to ensuring gender equality in high-paying jobs in the industry and promoting innovation, creativity and representation. The median annual wage for computer and information technology jobs in May 2021 was $97,430. But of her five million people in computer jobs, only 24% of her are women.
That’s why the College Board’s research on AP CSP is so encouraging. According to the data, a female student who took her AP CSP in high school is more than five times as likely to major in Computer Science in college. This is in comparison to female students of similar background and academic preparation who did not take the CSP. The study found that AP CSP students are almost twice as likely to be admitted to her AP CSA, and for most students her AP CSP serves as a stepping stone to other advanced her AP STEM coursework. I understand.
These findings highlight the importance of schools across the country in achieving gender equality in AP computer science classrooms. Overall, female students remain underrepresented in high school computer science classes, making up just 33% of AP Computer Science Principles participants and her 25% of AP Computer Science A participants. Currently, 51% of her high schools nationwide teach basic computer science. Winner of her AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award this year, her 1,105 school has been the inspiration and model for every high school in the United States.
