CHICO — The snowplow is in full swing this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service Sacramento, travelers will have more than 5 feet of snow in the forecast through Monday, making it nearly impossible to cross the Sierra Nevada as the storm brings the biggest snowfall expected this morning in Northern California. I have.
“We are fine in Butte County. The main route to Tahoe has been in chain control since (Friday) night,” said Caltrans District 3 Public Affairs Officer Gilbert Mortes Chan.
Highways 20, 50 and 80 include highways with chain restrictions, while Highways 32, 70 and Interstate 5 had no restrictions as of Saturday, Mohtes-Chan said. There is no chain regulation.
Mohtes-Chan said it’s hard to predict whether chain control will increase, but it’s likely because snow elevations are forecast to drop to 2,500 to 3,500 feet on Sunday.
NWS advised that mountainous terrain can lead to whiteout conditions, which can significantly reduce visibility while driving. Donner Pass and Lassen Peak can expect 48 to 60 inches of snow, and Interstate 5 can see 8 to 12 inches of snow.
Caltrans District 3 tweeted on Saturday that its crews are working around the clock to clear snow this weekend and advised drivers to beware of snowplows along the road.
Lows in the mid-30s to lows are expected in the North Valley tonight through Wednesday in Chico, Auroville, and Red Bluff.
Showers are expected in the valley Sunday afternoon, with less than half an inch of precipitation, along with gusts of up to 20 mph in Chico and Oroville. Up to 10 mph in Red Bluff.
Paradise will see a low of about 37 degrees Celsius and a high of about 43 to 45 degrees Celsius through Wednesday, while Magaria will see a low of about 35 degrees and a high of about 42 to 45 degrees.
