Samsung has officially unveiled a new line of smartphones, including the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra, a few months after Apple released its iPhone 14 lineup.
The company unveiled its new gadget on February 1st at its Unpacked event, which happens every Q1. As expected, the latest version brings several enhancements and additions to the 2022 Galaxy line.
Despite being the entry-level model in Samsung’s lineup, the Galaxy S23 rivals the iPhone 14 Pro in some respects.

Galaxy S23 vs iPhone 14 Pro – Display
The iPhone 14 Pro features a Super Retina XDR display using OLED technology with a pixel density of 460 and a resolution of 2,556 x 1,179.
This is an always-on display featuring ProMotion technology with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1. The iPhone has a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits, 1,600 nits for HDR content, and can be pushed to a peak brightness of 2,000 nits outdoors.

The Galaxy S23 display is 6.1 inches with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels and a density of 425 pixels per inch. Unlike the iPhone 14 Pro, Samsung uses Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology in its Galaxy S23 display. However, it offers a refresh rate of up to 120Hz as well and a touch sampling rate of his 240Hz in game mode.
A type of OLED display, AMOLED technology has several advantages, including less power consumption and more vivid colors. These displays are thinner and more flexible, as evidenced by Samsung’s foldable smartphones.
However, AMOLED technology tends to be more expensive than OLED and is less visible in direct sunlight. The iPhone’s display can reach 2,000 nits in outdoor environments, better than the Galaxy S23.

The 2nd Gen Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 equips the Galaxy S23 with 4 performance cores and 3 efficiency cores. It also features an Adreno GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing for gaming, improving lighting, shadows, and illumination effects.
It offers artificial intelligence improvements, including up to 4.35x faster performance than the previous generation.

Qualcomm, for example, built the first camera processor with artificial intelligence into a chip. Its image signal processor supports 8K video capture at 10-bit HDR and photo capture at up to 200 megapixels.
Similar to Apple’s computational photography process, Snapdragon 8 has real-time semantic segmentation. During processing, the chip can independently apply different levels of noise reduction, sharpening and color correction to up to eight photo layers.
Qualcomm has also added the Bokeh Engine 2 to its new processors. This allows you to adjust the quality, intensity and shape of the blurry background for portrait style images and videos. Other enhancements to photography features include better local tone mapping, improved image stabilization, and updated auto exposure compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
On Apple’s side, the A16 Bionic chip powers the iPhone 14 Pro, a 6-core CPU with four for efficiency and two for performance. It also has a 16-core neural engine capable of approximately 17 trillion operations per second and a 5-core GPU.

A16 Bionic’s benchmark on iPhone 14 Pro shows a single-core score of 1,882 and a multi-core score of 5,584.
The benchmarks for the Galaxy S23 haven’t been released yet, but the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s December CPU scores showed it managing 1,491 in single-core performance and 5,180 in multi-core performance.
These scores are closer to the A16 Bionic, but in-person use gives a good idea of how it fares against a chip design optimized for Apple’s software and hardware.
Geekbench shows that the A16 Bionic chip inside the iPhone 14 Pro has a metal score of 15,386. The Galaxy S23 doesn’t have a GPU score yet, but in some benchmarks it beats the A16 on some charts but lags on others. For example, although no numbers are given, the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited chart shows that the two chips are fairly close in score.

With a 3,200mAh battery, the iPhone 14 Pro can run up to 23 hours of video playback and up to 20 hours of streaming video. However, you can achieve up to 75 hours of audio playback.

The iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999 with 128GB of storage, with upgrade options of 256GB for $1,099, 512GB for $1,299, and 1TB for $1,499.

The iPhone 14 Pro comes in four colors: silver, space black, gold, and deep purple. On Samsung’s part, the color options for the S23 are Green, Lavender, Phantom Black, and Cream.
Samsung will also offer graphite and lime colors for the handset once supplies last. Another limited-time feature is that customers can upgrade to 256 GB of storage for free when they pre-order the device.
