Nantucket – A student in Nantucket was fired early Tuesday after a ransomware attack on computer systems in the school district. Out of an abundance of caution, school will be canceled on Wednesday.
Principal Elizabeth Hallett made the announcement in an email sent to the family.
All Nantucket Public Schools student and staff devices have been shut down along with their safety and security systems. According to the school, this includes phones and security cameras.
As a result, students and staff were dismissed at noon on Tuesday.
“Our information technology department has been working hard all day to restore our computers and Internet services, working with external data security experts,” said Hallett.
All athletic practices, games, Nantucket community pools, and the early childhood center at Nantucket Elementary School will continue as scheduled.
School districts said they shouldn’t use school-issued devices at home “until further notice” because they could compromise home networks.
