Metaverse-focused Layer 1 blockchain protocol Lamina1 has immediately promoted President Rebecca Birkin to CEO, according to the company’s blog post.
As CEO, Birkin will oversee all of Lamina1’s business operations, including “partnerships, fundraising efforts, developer relationships and execution of the company’s product roadmap,” the company wrote.
Barkin joined Lamina1 in August as president.
Lamina1, the brainchild of science fiction author Neal Stephenson and global blockchain expert Peter Vessenes, was first teased in June as the foundation for an open metaverse.
The team launched the Lamina1 Ecosystem Fund (L1EF) late last year to expand investor access for Web3 builders by providing builders with tools to raise funds for open metaverse initiatives. The fund launched on AngelList in his December offering a rolling fund that distributes capital to projects through quarterly subscriptions.
In a letter to investors written in December, Vessenes said that Lamina1 will be involved in “gaming, fashion, music, art, NFT projects, emergent AI, DeFi, GameFi, DeSoc, virtual machines, Layer 2 protocols, Privacy, payments, DAOs, marketplaces, bridges, applications, and immersive experiences. ”
Stevenson will continue to serve as chairman of Lamina 1 and Bessenes will continue in his role as executive chairman, the company wrote. The company plans to release the testnet to the community in the coming months.
Barkin has built an impressive career-driven strategy for companies focused on computer vision, AI, and VR companies. She previously served as Vice President of Content Strategy and Partners Her Solutions at Madison Square Garden Sphere, an immersive venue. Prior to that, she was Vice President at Augmented Reality company, Shee Magic Leap, and Head of Strategic Marketing at Computer Vision and Shee Nod Labs, an AI company.

“As we prepare Testnet for release to the community and focus on providing an efficient, performant, and easy-to-use protocol, we are honored and excited to step up to this challenge.” she said in a statement.
