iPhone 14 & 14 Pro devices reportedly overheating for some users

At its annual event on September 7, Apple announced the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple has definitely raised the bar this year, especially with the new iPhone 14 Pro series featuring the fastest chipset, the A16 Bionic, and a new camera system.

Across the iPhone 14 series, Apple has brought groundbreaking safety features such as crash detection, which can now identify serious car crashes, and automatically call emergency SOS services.

However, some iPhone 14 and 14 Pro users have complained that their devices overheat or get hot even with minimal use (1,2,3,Four,Five,67).

Some iPhone 14 Pro Max users seem to be experiencing similar issues.

Due to this issue, some iPhone owners claim that their handsets run hot all the time, even when they’re not running CPU/GPU-hungry applications. Others claim that it warms up slightly.

This heat usually comes from the right side of the camera bump or the top left corner of the iPhone screen. It then radiates out to the sides and the user can feel it across the front of the screen.

An iPhone owner said restarting the device fixed the overheating issue, while another suggested turning off the Always-On display.

My iPhone 14 Pro Max gets very hot when charging and using it at the same time. Even without charging, the phone itself feels warm just by browsing web pages. Is this normal?

Hello, I have a lot of iPhones in my family that use different chargers in my house. I set up my 14 Pro perfectly today. Everything is perfect except the phone gets very hot no matter which charger I use.In fact it was so hot that I got a message saying the phone stopped charging due to overheating . 12:57 PM (IST): Some users have returned or exchanged their iPhone 14 after experiencing overheating issues with the unit. According to the Redditor, the new one has no such issues.

So it is possible that some units are defective and the device may overheat.

6:32 PM IST: A Redditor points out that the iPhone 14 Pro is overheating even during fast charging. Additionally, you’ll see a message that charging has stopped until your iPhone reaches room temperature.

4:10 PM IST: Apple Support is now directing affected people to a support article that mentions some possible reasons and troubleshooting steps for iPhones getting hot.

10:53 AM (IST): Apple has released iOS 16.0.2 for iPhone 14 owners with bug fixes. However, the changelog doesn’t mention anything about the overheating issue.

5:52 PM IST: Apple support is now asking the affected person to send a DM for further assistance with the overheating issue. But they still haven’t acknowledged the problem.

12:57 PM (IST): A Redditor suggests a wireless charger that works fine with the iPhone 14 Pro Max. So, if you still have problems with wireless charging, check it out.

9:39 AM (IST): According to some (1, 2, 3, Four), other iPhones had overheating issues after the iPhone 14 was launched. This suggests that iOS 16 may be the cause of this issue.

4:53 PM (IST): Here are some workarounds that may help you fix the iPhone 14 overheating issue.

Workaround: One possible solution I’ve found is to keep energy saving turned on all the time. It sounds silly, but keeping it active will warm up your phone a lot less. Try it out and let me know what happens… (source)

1:15 PM (IST): According to one of our readers, the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro overheating issue persists even after updating to iOS 16.0.3. Turning off Always-On Display and closing all apps does not help.

I also turned off always on display and closed all apps. I updated to 16.0.3 and it still didn’t solve the problem.Also, on the fast charger it got really hot to the point where I think it was close enough to melt the solder joints

6:54 PM (IST): Some users claim that heating issues are more common when fast charging with 20W bricks. Even with a 5W brick, the phone won’t heat up.

I don’t think my 14 pro ever really gets warm remotely with light use, it does get a little hot when charging with the 20w Apple charging brick, but nothing out of the ordinary. I have a 5w charging brick overnight and it doesn’t get hot

12:58 PM (IST): Some users continue to report (1, 2, 3, 4) This issue occurs even after updating iOS several times. This suggests that Apple has not yet addressed this issue.

1:05 PM (IST): Some iPhone 14 users (1,2) indicate that overheating issues are especially exacerbated when using the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature in iOS.
