Windows 11 21H2 doesn’t reach end of support until October 10th, but Microsoft will start auto-upgrading devices to Windows 11 22H2. Starting with the earliest PCs upgraded to 21H2.
The company will now begin gradually updating consumer and unmanaged PCs running Home and Pro editions to Windows 11 version 21H2. This has been the standard practice since Windows 10, but this timeline is an earlier start than usual, consistent with Microsoft deeming it “broadly available” for devices that meet the minimum Windows 11 requirements. “Windows 11, version 22H2 is now generally available to all users with eligible devices that check for updates. Starting January 2023, Home and Pro consumer devices running Windows 11, version 21H2 and Unmanaged business devices will automatically update to version 22H2, Microsoft states in the Windows Release Health Hub:
Feature updates for Windows 11 are released in the second half of each year and come with two years of support for Home, Pro, Pro for Workstations, and Pro Education editions. After this period, Microsoft will not provide updates. Windows 11 Enterprise and Education editions are supported for 36 months.
“Since Windows 10, automatic updates have helped Windows users stay up-to-date and secure on supported versions of Windows. ,” said Microsoft.
Microsoft will release Windows 11 21H2 on October 4th, 2021 and end of support on October 10th. So Microsoft has a nine-month runway to get consumers closer to the latest version. Automatic upgrades from Windows 10 20H2 to version 21H2 started four months before 20H2 reached end of support.
“Automatic updates to Windows 11, version 22H2 will occur gradually, starting with devices that have been using version 21H2 for the longest time,” Microsoft said.
“Customer feedback and analysis indicate a positive experience with Windows 11, version 22H2,” he added.

Affected users have some control over when the upgrade occurs. You can also proactively upgrade via Settings and Windows Update.
Microsoft says that if it detects that your device may have compatibility issues, it may block updates until they are resolved.
Windows 11 22H2 is a minor upgrade released on September 20, 2022 and will be supported until October 8, 2024.
