A highly adaptable, feature-rich application now accessible on the Academy Software Foundation GitHub.
It was created to meet the varying requirements of a wide range of review scenarios across teams of connected users, regardless of location, office or remote.
According to VFX and animation company DNEG, an open source beta of xSTUDIO is now available through the Academy Software Foundation’s (ASWF) GitHub repository. The action follows Autodesk’s statement on Tuesday that an open source version of the RV review and playback system will also be available through his ASWF.
The Academy Software Foundation hosts and oversees the xSTUDIO open source project as part of the Open Review Initiative. This is a larger initiative aimed at creating a single open source toolset for playback, rating and approval of movies and related professional media.
The playback and review application xSTUDIO was built around the needs of content producers throughout the creation process. Modern, adaptable and feature-rich. The application has been carefully designed to meet the varied requirements of a wide range of review scenarios, including assessments involving groups of on-set, in-office, remote, and connected users.
xSTUDIO is a highly customizable player that can be used independently or incorporated into any workflow thanks to plugins and a Python API. Along with a fully functional Python API, C++ plugin framework, and heavy use of open source libraries, the program has a modern, feature-rich, pipeline-agnostic core application. This gives contributors complete control over how they are integrated into the pipeline.
A Technical Steering Committee (TSC) led by DNEG and composed of engineers and community participants will oversee xSTUDIO as an open source project. The project works under the direction of the Open Review Initiative, with itview, which Sony Pictures Imageworks will make available in the coming months, and Open RV, which Autodesk recently contributed. If you’re a software engineer, developer, or user interested in contributing to the project or community, join his Slack channel and mailing list for the ASWF Open Review Initiative.
DNEG is a founding member of the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF), founded in 2018 by the Linux Foundation and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. ASWF is the motion picture industry’s premier organization driving the development of open source software for image creation, visual effects, animation and sound technology.
Erik Strauss, Technical Steering Committee Chair of the Academy Software Foundation’s Open Review Initiative, said: As an open source project, it helps build an integrated review and approval ecosystem. With a production-driven, user-centric approach to in-studio media review, xSTUDIO is well positioned to lead the conversation for collaborative media review workflows within open review initiatives. ”
