Amazon has announced it will lay off 18,000 employees. The company had previously proposed laying off about 10,000 employees.
The news was announced on Amazon’s website by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy.
Today we would like to share the results of these additional reviews, a difficult decision to remove additional roles. Between the reductions we made in November and the reductions we are sharing today, we plan to reduce over 18,000 roles. Some teams are affected. However, the majority of role removals have been done in the Amazon store and his PXT organization.
The S team and I are deeply aware of the difficulty people face in retiring these roles, and we do not take these decisions lightly or underestimate how much they will impact the lives of those affected. I don’t. We are working to support those affected and are offering packages that include separation benefits, transitional health insurance benefits, and outside employment assistance.
We usually wait to communicate these results until we are able to speak to the directly affected people. However, one of my teammates leaked this information to the outside world and I decided it would be better to share this news early so they can hear the details directly from me.
This is bad news for Amazon employees affected by layoffs. For more information, see his website on Amazon at the link below.
