For small teams, every employee plays an important role in the business. From marketing efforts to sales to operations, each aspect of a business requires a full team effort to stay on track. This often means that team members work beyond the roles they are employed in.
With so much time and effort put into it, leaders will want to make sure their teams have all the support they need to reach their goals. Below, her eight members of the Young Entrepreneur Council share some of the ways startup her leaders show support and lead their teams to success.
1. Conduct regular 1:1 meetings with each team member
If you lead a small team, one of the most important things you can do to make your team successful is to make time to meet with each employee one-on-one. We have found that smaller teams can find it difficult in group settings to talk about areas where employees may be struggling or tasks that may be overwhelming. Meetings allow for open communication and expeditious resolution of any issues that arise. You can also express your ideas and opinions in a safe and comfortable space. 2. Understand the motivations of everyone on your team
We often assume that everyone is motivated by the same things that we are. Whether it’s making more money, growing at work, getting good feedback, or feeling part of a team, people need different things at different stages of their lives and careers. 3. Cultivate a culture of open communication
As a startup leader, your responsibility is to establish a corporate culture. By creating a culture that values open communication and allows it, your team feels comfortable asking questions, asking for help, and working together. 4. Make sure your team is aligned with your mission and vision

5. Invest in employee education and training
One of the things we’ve done is make sure everyone has the training they need. We offer a lot of on-the-job training, but we also invest in external education through books, courses, and digital training programs. This makes it easy for anyone to acquire the skills they need to succeed. We focus not only on training, but also on documentation and knowledge sharing. That way, if someone is out on vacation or you need to enhance someone else’s process, you have an internal wiki that contains all the information you need for cross-training. 6. Connect during daily team meetings
Huddle every day, even if it’s for 15 minutes, to keep everyone connected. In our meeting, he shares one thing each team member is grateful for: their status for the day, their goals and metrics against her KPIs, their roadblocks, their top priorities for the day, and what they are grateful for. 8. Support them with feedback and praise
